It’s hard for me to accept that it’s only been a week since I left NY. I feel like I’ve been out for a month at least. I think a lot of that has to do with moving around so much. Travel has a way of playing with one’s perception of time.

It’s 90 degrees with a heat index of 110 today. At 7AM, it was already blazing hot and I knew it was going to be a lazy day.

I spent most of the morning in the shaded area in front of Tina’s Backpackers, just avoiding the heat with some new and slightly less new friends (it feels like I’ve known some of them a long time… see travel/time perception above). Liam and Jessy left midday headed for the Bay Islands of Honduras, where I may meet up with them again.

Even spending the majority of the time in shade, well covered and wearing sunscreen, I felt a slight burn coming. I ducked into my cabana, turned the fan on full blast, and before I knew it, I was asleep. The heat just takes everything out of you.

When I woke up, I headed over to Sports Bar to join some Texans I had met the night before and watch some football.

At the bar, I met the owner, Lloyd, who also owns bars in Toronto and Orlando (a place called Hurricane Cody’s – Jeremy?). I also met a French couple who live in NYC. I realized that I’m still way more proficient in French than Spanish, and I can fake a French accent with the best of ’em.

Before too long, Trivia Night started. Very Binghamton Sports Bar, circa 2002-esque. Another lone trivia buff, a 20 year old Austrian dude, teamed up with me and we were off. We did well, hovering around 2nd place all night. We ended up in fourth place, just beaten out by the NY Frenchies.

All in all, I had a fantastic time and I’m loving the relaxed party culture of Caye Caulker.
