Medellin is a modern, big city in the mountains of Colombia. After getting in at around 8am, we (there were about 10 of us travelling together from Cartagena) took cabs from the bus station over to The Pit Stop hostel, in a southern part of town known as El Poblado.

It was morning, and though I had slept most of the bus ride, I was pretty well exhausted. Luckily, Pit Stop has a huge TV and a bunch of DVDs in a room with big comfy couches. Perfect passing out conditions.

Later in the day, we wandered the area a bit, in search of food. It proved surprisingly difficult to find decent food for cheap. The area around the hostel is nice, clean and safe, but definitely pricier than I’m used to.

As the day winded down, a large group from the hostel started making plans to head to Zona Rosa, a nearby area with loads of bars and restaurants. We dressed in our backpackers best (long pants and an honest to goodness clean shirt), and headed out to town. It was a great night of eating, drinking, getting lost, chatting with locals (a communications major at the university spoke to me in English and I responded in Spanish so we could both practice), staying out until morning and being merry.
