We got something of a late start on the day (mostly due to acrually eating breakfast; restaurant service in Nicaragua has been painfully slow) and ended up getting the bus to Rivas and the subsequent cab ride to San Jorge just in time to catch the ferry to the Ometepe.
Fun facts: Ometepe is made up of two volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas. It is also the largest fresh water island in the world.
On the short ferry ride, we met Morgan, a jolly Irishman who owns a hostel on the island. He offered to give us a ride for free and gave us good rates for a night’s stay.
The ride ended up being 7 backpackers and all their gear loaded into the bed of a small pickup for 45 minutes over mostly unpaved roads. I’m really getting used to this kind of travel and starting to enjoy it.
When we arrived at Little Morgan’s, I knew it was going to be a great place to stay. The whole place is full of hand built, palm thatched huts that give it a nice Gilligan’s Island vibe. Ther I opted to stay in a hammock by the lakeside. Absolutely gorgeous.
For dinner, the restaurant whipped up some curry chicken and mashed potatoes. After dinner revelry included a long game of Celebrity Heads, watching Morgan go from jolly to endearingly belligerent (friendly headlocks and knees to the skull as can only be delivered by an Irishman) through the magic of rum, and some late night billiards.
